How to Get Discounts on Auto Insurance

How to Get Discounts on Auto Insurance

By Iris Turner, Commercial Lines Agent

Let’s talk about something I think everyone can get behind: How to get auto insurance with a lower premium, or how to get discounted auto insurance.

Usually auto insurance is based on your risk level, which is determined by things like the type of car you drive, where you live, your driving record, and other factors.

My biggest piece of advice for you in order to get a better rate or price on your auto insurance is to not wait until renewal time. The easiest thing to do is to set a reminder for yourself for about three weeks or a month before renewal is due and simply call up your insurance agent and ask: “How can I lower my premium?”

There are some different ways your agent may be able to lower your premium. For example, if you have a good student in your home, send in their grades. Their good work might qualify them for a lower rate.

If you’ve bought a house since the last time you renewed your policy, send proof of your home ownership. This could also lower your rates, since typically drivers who own their homes pay a little less for auto insurance. If you have bought a new car and you have different policies, ask if you can bundle them for a discounted rate – the multi-car discount can be a good one.

If you have your homeowner’s insurance policy with one carrier and your auto insurance with another carrier, ask about bundling those, too, for a discount. People who have served in the military and seniors may also qualify for discounted premiums.

Additionally, most insurance carriers will give you a discount if you pay your entire premium up front, rather than month to month – otherwise known as “pay in full.” There could also be discounts for selecting to go paperless, meaning you get your statements and pay your premiums online.

Finally, many insurance companies have a loyalty discount. In those cases, the longer you stay with a company, the more favorable your rate will get.

I hope these suggestions are helpful and arm you with information that helps you ask for a lower rate. Remember, the more your agent knows, the more likely they are to be able to get you a discount.
